A Message From A Marine

Semper Fi Parents | May 24, 2011

One of our newest Facebook friends sent me the following, and with his permision I am passing it along.
You will enjoy this one.

I wanted to share a story with you.
9/11 happened before I was 21.
I was in the Corps for over three years when we deployed.
I served as a combat engineer.

One night out side of Al Kut (20 m SSW of Bagdad) I was standing post as COG (Corporal of the Guard) on the perimeter of a couple square mile FOB (Forward Operating Base) nicknamed Three Rivers of all things.
It was so flat, when the sun went down it looked like a giant marble balancing on the edge of a table, and suddenly it rolled off.

It was dark.
No and I do mean NO ambient light.
One of my Marines had been hit by shrapnel a week before and I was a little shaken up. (He is fine now FYI).

By the glimmer of starlight I see about 12 men walking toward me. There has been no radio contact of patrols out, nor has there been a request to cross our perimeter.
I had one sentry at my post with me and we were alternating sleep for the last 2 days.
I kicked him hard in the chest to wake him quick and ripped the NVG's (Night Vision Goggles) off his neck.
He sprang to his feet and readied his weapon, knowing exactly why I had kicked him.
I peered through the green lenses of the NVG's to see 150 camels walking at us.

I nearly crapped my pants. It wasn't funny then, but it is now.

It is great to see you are so proud of your daughter.

Have a great day and Semper Fi.
